Officials - French Open

Tennis Officials from Australia has always been regarded as some of the best in the world. And this year is no exception, with no less than 11 officials selected to officiate on the famous red clay in Paris. An even greater accolade for the tennis community in ACT and NSW is that a staggering 9 of the 11 officials selected for the French Open are from ACT and NSW.

Pictured above is Team Australia outside Stade Suzanne Lenglen at ROLAND-GARROS 2015: (from left to right) Simon Cannavan (QLD), Glenn Toland (NSW), Troy Deighton (NSW), Pat Nugent (NSW), Matt Kellert (NSW), Donna Kelso (NSW), Wayne McKewen (NSW), Pam Whytcross (NSW), John Blom (NSW), Thomas Sweeney (VIC) and Emma Walter (ACT).

When asked to comment, Martin Oosthuysen (TA Officiating Development Coordinator for ACT/NSW) said: “We are so proud of the ACT and NSW members chosen for this great tournament. Not only is it a reflection on years of hard work and commitment by these officials, it is testimony to the officiating structures and quality of courses that contributed to their development. We are fortunate to have such a quality group heading up the officiating for ACT and NSW.”

Many of the officials in this group are also heading to the grass courts of Wimbledon this week. We wish them the best of luck, as they represent Australia at the All England Lawn Tennis club, The Home of Tennis.

There are many ways you can get involved as a tennis official – whether that’s getting out on the lines or being up in a chair like these officials, or helping out off-court at our local tournaments.

Upcoming courses are being held in the ACT on Saturday the 18th of July (Line Umpires course) and Saturday August 1st (Court Supervisor’s course).
