Tennis ACT was saddened to hear of the passing of life member Roy Smalley, OAM this month.  Roy held a number of roles in the tennis community in the ACT over a period of almost 50 years.  He was elected as the President of Braddon Tennis Club and held the position for over 40 years, assisting at all levels of the club.  Roy served as the President of Tennis ACT from 1985 to 1993 and was honoured as a life member in 1993.  In his time as President he fought to have the ACT recognised as a separate state with consequent voting rights on the council of Tennis Australia.  His efforts were acknowledged by Tennis Australia in a special presentation made to Roy during the Australian Open.

Roy was also the President of the Lawn Tennis Umpires Association of ACT for many years,  and had the opportunity to officiate in Davis Cup events.  In 1996, Roy received an OAM in recognition of his services to tennis over nearly 50 years.  In 2012, Roy wrote a book on the history of Tennis ACT and tennis in the territory from 1890-1993 – Anyone for tennis? A chronological history of the Australian Capital Territory Tennis Association and tennis in the territory.

On behalf of the tennis community in the ACT we would like to extend our condolences to the Smalley family and to acknowledge the amazing contribution Roy made to tennis in the ACT.
