Ali & Matt

Top seeds Alison Bai and Matthew Barton have taken out the titles at the ACT Open Platinum AMT on Saturday at the Canberra Tennis Centre. The top seeds both posted convincing straight set wins and will now turn their attention to the Pro Tour events in Asia.

World number 381, Alison Bai was up against number 7 seeds Alexandra Bozovic in the Women’s Final. Bozovic was full of confidence after a great week, coming through qualifying as a late entry, and defeating the number 2 and 3 seeds on her way to the final. Bai however, proved too solid for the 16 year old, taking the match comfortably 6-2, 6-1. Bai was impressed with the new European clay courts at the Canberra Tennis Centre and how they held up over the tournament. Bai will now have a couple of weeks off before turning her attention to a five week tournament block in Asia. She will then look to head to the UK the grasscourt season before playing in Europe.

In the Men’s final, Matthew Barton and Adam Taylor had experienced contrasting roads to the final. World number 382 Barton, had only dropped 7 games heading into the final, while Taylor had battled through three, three set matches. Barton got off to a quick start, taking the first set 6-1. The second set was more closely contested, but Barton overpowered Taylor, taking the second set and the title, 6-4. Like Bai, Barton will head to Asia for a series of Challenger events, before heading to the UK for the grasscourt season with the goal of playing in qualifying at Wimbledon.

In the Men’s doubles, brothers Adam and Jason Taylor were too good for Jonathon Bejar and Blazo Djurovic, winning 6-1, 6-1. Canberra Velocity pair Tyra Calderwood and Imogen Clews won the Women’s Doubles over Kaitlin Staines and Nicole Morris, 10-7 in a super tiebreak.
