Annerly Poulos

Congratulations to Nick Kyrgios for his amazing achievement at the Australian Open. Nick defeated 4 top 60 players including 23rd seed Ivo Karlovic en route to the quarter-finals where he went down to eventual runner-up Andy Murray. It was a very gutsy effort especially considering Nick had a sore back leading up and throughout the event which hampered his preparation. Despite this, Nick managed to win 2 matches in the fifth set, the 2nd vs Seppi being one of the greatest Australian Open matches we have seen. Nick is the only player since Roger Federer to reach 2 Grand Slam quarter-finals as a teenager. Nick is now aiming to be fit for the Davis Cup in the Czech Republic on March 6.

Also competing at the Australian Open was ACT player Alexa Nancarrow. Alex, who is based in Spain, received a main draw doubles wildcard with West Australian Madison Inglis. The pair went down in a close match to 16th seeds and eventual finalists Julia Georges and Anna-Lena Gronefeld from Germany.

Meanwhile on the pro tour ACT player and Canberra Velocity team member Alison Bai continues to beat highly ranked players and she recently made the quarter-finals of the Burnie $50,000 event, boosting her singles ranking to 402. Alex and Alison are the 10th and 11th highest ranked Australian female players whilst Nick Kyrgios is now the No.1 ranked Australian player at world number 36.

Also in the winners circle again was 12 year old Annerly Poulos. Annerly won the 14/u girls singles at the Wodonga Gold Junior Event and also reached the final of the doubles with fellow Canberra Martina Ujdur, who also reached the semi-finals of the singles.  Other good results from that event included Ashleigh Simes and Imogen Clews who both reached the quarter-finals of the 12/u girls singles and the womens AMT singles respectively.

The Canberra Velocity Women’s team also headed to Melbourne for the Asia Pacific Tennis League National Final in January.  The team faced the Flagstaff Freighters in the first round in a closely contested battle.  After the singles it was 2 rubbers all, however the Freighters proved too strong in the doubles to take the match 4-2.  Velocity then rebounded to beat the New Zealand Tuis 5-1 to finish in equal 5th place.

The new courts at the Canberra Tennis Centre held their first open event with the running of the ACT Gold AMT.  The great venue was appreciated by all the players and the standout performances were from Canberra Velocity team member James Frawley, who reached the final of the mens AMT singles and Annerly Poulos, who won the womens consolation event.
