On Friday the 5th of December the Community Tennis team attended the Governor General’s Sports Day.  Over 1,000 primary school students from the ACT and surrounds took part in demonstrations, drills, and workshops across 11 different sports.  The day was designed to encourage active and healthy lifestyles, inclusiveness in the classroom and playground, and ‘having a go’.

A variety of tennis activities were on offer to the children including ANZ Tennis Hot Shots, hit the target, and speed serve.  The Australian Open trophies were also on display with children given the chance to hold and take photos with the trophies.  The Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove dropped into the tennis activities and also had his photo taken with the trophies.  Members of the Men’s and Women’s Canberra Velocity team also dropped in to inspire the next generation of players.

In speaking about the day Lenka Greenhalgh, General Manager Tennis Operations, said “It was a fantastic for the kids to have the opportunity to participate in tennis along with a wide variety of other sports.  The kids enjoyed getting up close to the trophies, and it was great to have the Canberra Velocity out on court with the  kids”.
