Canberra Velocity Women have booked their place in the final of the NSW/ACT Conference with two more wins on Sunday. The Velocity Women are full of confidence having remained undefeated after 5 rounds of conference play. The Men have concluded their season after two losses on Sunday. It was a busy day at the Canberra Tennis Centre, with a double header scheduled after play was abandoned on Saturday due to the rain without a ball being hit.

The Velocity Women were ruthless in their first match of the day defeating the South East Smashers without losing a set. Alexandra Nancarrow played her first match of the season for Velocity putting the team up 1-0 with a 4-3, 4-0 victory over Renee McBryde. Tyra Calderwood then made it 2-0 defeating Francesca Agazzi 4-1, 4-1. Alison Bai made quick work of Jasmin King, putting Velocity up 3-0 without losing a game. Maria Vais only dropped 1 game in her match against Kate Lynch. The good form continued in doubles with Lauren Simpson combining with Bai to win 4-1, 4-1, and Imogen Clews and Nicole Morris rounding out the match with a 4-2, 4-2 victory.

In the afternoon the Women faced the Sydney University Lions. Alison Bai only dropped 1 game in singles all day after putting Velocity up 1-0 with a 4-0, 4-1 victory over Pamela Boyanov. Bai has been undefeated in singles and doubles play this season. The Lions then hit back with Imogen Clews going down in a tight 3 set match against Rebecca Stewart. Maria Vais put Velocity back in front with a straight sets victory over Bec Jones. The scores were tied up once more as Tyra Calderwood lost her first match of the season to Martin Hudaly in 3 sets. Vais and Clews then put Velocity up 3-2, only dropping 2 games in their doubles win. Lauren Simpson and Calderwood clinched the win, winning the match tiebreak 10-5.

The Velocity Men faced the tough task of playing ladder leaders the Manly Waves. The Waves showed why they are title favourites with a 6-0 defeat of Velocity. Jake Eames lost a close battle with world number 265 Matt Reid, going down in 2 tie break sets. Jay Andrijic then beat Velocity’s James Frawley in 3 sets to put the Waves up 2-0. World number 521 Matt Barton was impressive in his victory against Dimi Morogiannis only dropping 1 game. The Waves then went up 4-0 with Michael Tebbutt defeating Jake Okines. The Waves continued their clean sweep in the doubles with Reid and Barton defeating Eames and James Frawley, while Andrijic and Boyd Blackburn accounted for Morogiannis and Ryan Frawley.

In the afternoon Velocity lined up against the Sydney University Lions. For the second time this season, Velocity were level at 3 rubbers all with the Lions, but lost on sets 7 to 6. The Lions put first points on the board with Chris O’Connell defeating Jake Eames. James Frawley quickly levelled the scores with a 4-3, 4-1 win over Kris Balakrishan. Dimi Morogiannis then fell to Steven Goh in two tiebreak sets. The Lions then went up 3-1 heading into the doubles with Alex Silcock defeating Jake Okines. Ryan Frawley and Okines proved to be a winning combination taking a straight sets victory to make it 3-2. Alun Jones and James Frawley then levelled the rubber with a super tiebreaker win over O’Connell and Goh. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough, with the Lions winning on a count back 7 sets to 6.

The Velocity Women will now turn their attention to the NSW/ACT Conference Final against the UTS Lizards. The teams have only met once this season with Velocity winning a close encounter which went to a count back on sets. The final will take place on Friday the 12th of December at 6.00pm at City Community Tennis in Surry Hills.
