Visitors to the Queanbeyan Park Tennis Club family and community free tennis day will have the opportunity to use courts at no cost, measure the speed of their serve and play Mayor Tim Overall for prizes.

The family and community day on the afternoon of Sunday November 2 is an open invitation to all Queanbeyan residents to ‘have a hit’ for free, compare their serve speed to the pros on Tennis ACT’s Speed Serve machine and win prizes in competitions including ‘Ace the Mayor’

Children’s activities include a chance to sample the ANZ Hot Shots Program including mini-court and ‘Hit the Target’.

A collection of tennis memorabilia will be on display including old racquets that visitors can trial on-court to experience how technology such as racquet innovation has altered the game.

All guests are also invited to join Club members for a complementary ‘old fashioned’ afternoon tea from 2.30pm.

One of the organisers and Club Secretary Kris Mitchell said the family and community day was conceived to provide an opportunity for people to experience tennis for free.

“Free court and equipment use including racquets and balls allows everyone to have a go, trial the game and discover whether it is something they or their children may like to do more of”.

“Many people enjoy watching Grand Slams like The Australian Open but haven’t had the opportunity to play themselves. We hope our family and community event will provide that opportunity for people of all ages.

“Club members will also be on hand as hitting partners so everyone including individual guests will have ample opportunity to play”.

“if people want to take it further, the Club can offer all the support new or rusty players might need including adult and children’s group coaching squads that allow participants to build confidence in a fun and friendly environment and a range of social playing opportunities. Affordable individual, concession and family memberships also include access to courts throughout the year.”
The event has attracted the support of Queanbeyan Mayor and tennis fan Tim Overall who will play an exhibition match and has courageously offered the ‘Ace the Mayor’ competition – giving guests an opportunity to ‘ace him’ in a bid to win prizes.
“There will be many opportunities to win prizes through various competitions and activities on the day. Local businesses have shown fantastic support with prizes including vouchers and products from Tennis Australia, Copper Kettle Cafe, Ciao Coffee & Cakes, Lindbeck’s Butchery and Nutrimetics consultant Catherine Hempstead. Shane Holland from 40Plus Gym will also lead a stretch session at 4.30pm showing how to warm-up and warm-down for sporting activities such as tennis,” KrisĀ  said.
