As local star Nick Kyrgios continues his all-conquering Wimbledon charge, Canberra’s tennis future has received an additional boost with construction of the new multi-million dollar sports facility at Lyneham now under way.

The $27 million shared project with Next Generation Clubs Australia includes funding from the ACT Government, Tennis Australia and Tennis ACT to redevelop the tennis facilities at The National Sports Club, Lyneham, where Kyrgios launched his tennis career.

The 19-year-old Canberra star, who downed world No.1 Rafael Nadal (ESP) to advance to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon overnight, continues to use the venue as his training base when at home in the ACT.

The all-new Tennis ACT facility will include eight Plexi-pave hard courts, 12 clay courts, four synthetic grass courts, four ANZ Tennis Hot Shots courts and an indoor tennis centre with four Plexi-pave hard courts.

The facility will accommodate the needs of community-based programs, athlete development and professional events.

Tennis ACT CEO Ross Triffit said commencement of the project capped an exciting time for tennis in Canberra.

“The National Sports Club held many memories and hosted great events over the years and the overall redevelopment of the site will create a new sporting destination for Canberrans,” he said.

“The project is a major coup for all Canberra tennis fans, and Nick’s success at Wimbledon overnight shows the importance of providing tennis facilities within the community.”

The tennis hub is due to be operational by January, with the entire redevelopment project to be completed by mid-2015.

Additional facilities at the all-new Next Generation Canberra will include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, relaxation areas, squash courts, a cafe, bar, bistro and lounge, and a 1500 square metre gym and exercise studios.

“We‘re delighted that construction is now under way and through our partnership with Tennis ACT and Tennis Australia, our unique brand of world class facilities will soon be available to the Canberra community,” said Next Generation Clubs’ Director of Marketing and Product, Andrew Savage.
