30 June 2014 | Tennis ACT

By David Briggs

Some of ACT’s club players took to the Courts on the afternoon of Saturday 21 June at Melba Tennis Club to test their net skills out in the 2014 Super Serve Volley Tournament.

It was a picture perfect day and great conditions for some attacking tennis at the net. The tournament was an 8 player round robin made up of Daniel Green, Jeff Gray, Dave Briggs, Jamie Adrian, Michael Bruen, Samantha Briggs, Christian Parker and Nelson Parker.

The rules of the Super Serve Volley tournament are, you must Serve Volley every first and second serve or you automatically lose the point. The round robin format was a best of one super tie breaker (First to 10, win by 2). The finals and playoffs were a best of 3 Tie Breaker sets (Sudden death at 9 all)

The round robin matches showcased high levels of serve volley and each match was a real contest. Christian Parker went undefeated in the round robin matches to make it to the semi finals and the semi finals also included, Daniel Green, Nelson Parker and Jeff Gray. Each semi final was a battle and after hard fought contests, Christian and Nelson Parker made up the final.

The final lived up to expectation going to one set all and both brothers continued competing hard to go to a 9 all sudden death in the final set. Nelson Parker serving on match point hit a solid volley that was a let chord and then just dropped over the net for the win. Congratulations to both finalists and thanks to all players that “Got to the net” for 3+ hours.

The creation of Super Serve Volley Tournaments were inspired by myself, family and friends watching Pat Rafter live at the 2001 Wimbledon Final where he narrowly lost to Goran Ivanisevic (still shed a tear). The goal is to keep the Serve Volley Dream Alive!!

The tournament was first run as the Wimbledon Warmup in 2006. It then changed to the Super Serve Volley Tournament in 2007 and 2009, and had been awaiting its return till now……

I would like to thank the Melba Tennis Club and On the Line Tennis for their support in making this Tournament possible.
