On Friday, the Kaleen Tennis Club hosted one of the more successful initiatives of the year, the MLC Tennis Hot Shots tournament. The event attracted over 50 kids, who competed using different balls and courts depending on their age and ability.

The youngest kids, aged from 5-7, competed on the red court, which used mini-nets and modified tennis balls which bounce 75% less than regular tennis balls, while the older kids aged from 7-12 competed on the orange court, which used ¾ of a full sized tennis court and orange balls that bounce 50% less than regulation balls.

Many of the kids were participating in competition tennis for the first time, with the main focus of the day to gain valuable experience and match play, rather than winning and losing.

Every child that participated in the event received a prize from Tennis ACT and the top two players from each pool received a medal for their outstanding performance.

The organiser of the event and head coach of Kaleen Tennis Club Nathan Price did a great job in ensuring the event ran smoothly without any hiccups. He was well supported by Kristine Richardson, who organises all the events through Tennis ACT, and also coaches at Kaleen.

“The event was a huge success for everyone involved, one of the highlights for us was the number of kids that came from all around Canberra to compete, and many were playing in their first tournament. It’s great to see so many kids playing and loving tennis,” Richardson said during the event.

The next MLC Tennis Hot Shots event will be held at Old Parliament House on the 30th of September for more information please ask your club coach or contact Anthony at Tennis ACT on 61 607 800.
